저는 왜 한국을 학업 목적지로 선택했을까요?
As a student who spent almost 7 years pursuing an English major, I was expected to continue my higher education in an English-speaking country, such as Australia or Canada. However, at the end of the day, I chose to study in Korea - a decision that amazed a lot of my friends and family members. Therefore, in this article, I will explain the reasons that lead to my decision.
영어 전공을 추구하며 거의 7년을 보낸 학생으로서, 저는 호주나 캐나다와 같은 영어권 국가에서 고등 교육을 계속 받을 것으로 기대되었습니다. 하지만, 결국, 저는 한국에서 공부하는 것을 선택했고, 이것은 많은 제 친구들과 가족들을 놀라게 한 결정이었습니다. 그러므로, 이 글에서, 저는 저의 결정을 이끌어내는 이유에 대해 설명하겠습니다.
1. Tuition fee and Scholarship
One of the most important criteria (probably the most crucial one) is the tuition fee to study abroad. Compared to other countries, Korea has a comparatively lower cost for education. Furthermore, many scholarships are offered for international students, both newly coming students and current-enrolled students. You can find all the information on each university’s website. 1. 등록금과 장학금
가장 중요한 기준 중 하나는 유학에 필요한 등록금입니다. 다른 나라들에 비해 한국은 교육비가 상대적으로 낮습니다. 아래 이미지는 한국 정부(studyinkorea.go.kr)에서 발행하는 한국 대학들의 평균 등록금입니다.

2. Living expenses in Korea
The second criterion apart from tuition fee is the living expenses. Korea's cost of living is in the middle range compared to other countries from my personal experience. It is not too expensive but also not too cheap. More interestingly, if you get acquainted with the life here, you might find some places that sell affordable grocery, hence minimizing your living expenses.
Another crucial criterion that should be counted toward living expenses is the health insurance. Starting from the beginning of 2021, all foreigners are required to register for National Health Insurance and receive the same benefits as Korean residents do when it comes to health problems. This makes our life in Korea safer than ever. Unprecedented events can lead to a huge medical bill that might become a burden on foreigners, especially students. However, through this insurance, we can pay a small amount monthly while getting the usual benefits.
2.한국생활비
등록금 외에 두 번째 기준은 생활비입니다. 제 개인적인 경험으로 볼 때 한국의 생활비는 다른 나라에 비해 중간 정도입니다. 너무 비싸지도 않고 너무 싸지도 않아요. 더 흥미롭게도, 만약 여러분이 이곳의 생활을 알게 된다면, 여러분은 저렴한 식료품을 파는 몇몇 장소를 발견할지도 모릅니다, 그래서 여러분의 생활비를 최소화합니다.
생활비에 반영되어야 할 또 다른 중요한 기준은 건강보험입니다. 2021년 초부터 모든 외국인은 국민건강보험에 가입해야 하고, 내국인도 건강문제와 같은 혜택을 받아야 합니다. 이것은 한국에서의 우리의 삶을 그 어느 때보다도 더 안전하게 만듭니다. 우리는 언젠가 우리의 건강에 어떤 일이 일어날지 결코 알 수 없습니다. 따라서, 그것은 국민건강보험에 가입하는 데 드는 의료비의 부담을 떠안게 될 것입니다.
3. Korean Culture
Culture is another root for my decision to come to Korea. Back when I was a secondary school student, I loved the feeling of spending all day long watching Korean dramas and listening to Kpop. I even tried my hand to make some Korean dishes such as Kimbap or Tteokbokki and found myself enjoying them. (Source: https://www.123rf.com)
The more I immerse myself in Korean culture, the more I realize that it would not stop at just "Hallyu" and "cuisine." On learning about the heritage of this country, I also want to know more about the history, the traditions and various customs that make this country unique. All this stimulates my creativity and deepens my love for this culture.
3. 한국문화
문화는 제가 한국에 오기로 결정한 또 다른 뿌리입니다. 중등학교 시절로 돌아가면 하루 종일 한국 드라마를 보고 케이팝을 듣는 느낌이 너무 좋았어요. 김밥이나 떡볶이 같은 한국 음식도 만들어 보고 정말 맛있게 먹고 있습니다.
한국 문화에 대한 제 자신을 깊게 할수록, 저는 그것이 "한류"와 "요리"에만 그치지 않을 것이라는 것을 더 많이 알고 있습니다. 한국 문화에 대해 배우는 것에 대해서도 저는 한국의 역사, 한국의 전통의상, 한국의 관습에 대해 알고 있습니다. 이것은 저의 창의력을 자극하고 저의 미래에 대한 깊은 지식을 일깨워줍니다.
