Nestled within evergreen mountains and draped in cloaks of changing colors is the Okyeonji Pond, a natural treasure hidden away from the heart of #ColorfulDaegu. It is a charming, picturesque landscape, often neglected by locals and hardly ever visited by travelers.
I first visited it last winter, before the temperatures dropped to a degree that would make me homebound. I mean, although there is nothing wrong with curling up with a nice book and a warm cup of tea or marathoning the Harry Potter movies for the gazillionth time under a cozy blanket, sometimes, our bodies crave the slightest bit of movement and fresh air to re-energize.
And there was magic in Okyeonji!! Not the same you see in the movies but something organic and pure. You see, much like many other Korean natural landscapes, this one transforms and adopts a new personality that mirrors the current season. Therefore, in the Spring, expect to see bursts of pink bloom all the way down from the wild hills and the flowers of many colors snuggled in the planters of neighboring Songhae Park. In the Summer, those who don’t have time to visit Busan, Namhae, or any of the closest beach cities, will instead come here, to delight in the much-needed soft breeze, hike the neighboring trails, and soak their feet in the pond’s water. Fall might just be the best time to visit, not only Okyonji but anywhere in Daegu, as it’s when the city’s official nickname makes the most sense.
But it is the winter season here that resembles the scenes shown in those movies. Misty, gloomy, and with a hint of mystique. It’s at its most beautiful when the morning haze is still hovering around or late in the afternoon with the sun blushing orange before dozing off to sleep behind the mountains.
It’s also said that if you cross Baeksae Bridge (as the name literally indicates in Korean), you will live to be 100 years old. Whether you believe in legends or not, one thing I can guarantee: the view you will get of the city in the distance, almost rising out of the water between two mounts that don’t meet, is almost otherworldly.
There are plenty of light fixtures meant to illuminate the waters and its margins after dark. Some are shaped like hearts while others are like swans. Personally, it’s not the type of artificiality I tolerate in a natural haven but if it floats your boat, go ahead and snap a few Insta-worthy pictures (the background will forgive you).
So, if you’re living in Daegu or happen to be in the area, I definitely recommend that you go and experience the magic yourself. It’s not in the most accessible of areas but it’s a lovely location for a weekend afternoon. If you have the time, also visit Yongyeonsa Temple on your way down and trek the trails to see the pond from every possible angle.
Okyeonji remains to this day, one of my favorite hidden gems in all of Korea. And now my secret is yours, too. Don’t keep it to yourself and have fun exploring!

옥연지의 마법
상록수 산과 색깔의 망토 사이에 자리를 잡고 있는 옥연지는 화려한 대구의 심장에서 숨겨진 자연의 보물입니다. 이곳은 매력적이고 그림 같은 풍경 있지만 보통에 지역 주민들은 관심 많이 주지 않고 여행객들이 거의 방문하지 않는 곳입니다.
저는 작년 겨울에 집에 나갈 수 없을정도 기온이 떨어지기 전에 옥연지를 처음 방문했습니다. 제 말은, 좋은 책과 따뜻한 차 한 잔으로 몸을 웅크리거나, 아늑한 담요 아래서 수십 번 해리 포터 영화를 다시 보는건 문제 없습니다. 하지만 때때로, 다른 다른것보다, 우리 몸은 에너지를 다시 공급하기 위해 약간의 움직임과 신선한 공기를 갈망합니다.
그리고 옥연지에도 마법이 있었습니다. 영화에서 보는 곳과 같은 곳이 아니라 좀 더 유기적이고 순수한 것입니다. 다른 많은 한국의 자연 풍경과 마찬가지로, 이곳은 현재의 계절을 반영하는 새로운 성격을 변형시키고 채택합니다. 그래서, 봄에는, 여러분은 야생 언덕에서 쭉 내려오는 분홍색 꽃과 가까운 송해 공원의 화초들 속에서 다양한 색깔의 꽃들을 볼 수 있을 것이라고 예상할 수 있습니다. 여름에는, 부산, 남해 또는 가장 가까운 해변 도시를 방문할 수 없는 사람들이 이곳에 와서, 매우 필요한 부드러운 바람을 즐기고, 가까운 길을 하이킹하고, 연못의 물에 발을 담그고 있을 것입니다. 가을은 옥연지뿐만 아니라 대구의 어느 곳이든 방문하기에 가장 좋은 시기일 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 이 도시의 공식 별명이 가장 말이 되는 때이기 때문입니다.
하지만 겨울은 그 영화들처럼 안개가 끼고, 우울하고, 신비로운 기미가 느껴집니다. 아침 안개가 아직도 주위에서 맴돌거나 오후 늦게 태양이 주황색으로 붉게 물든 채 산 뒤에서 졸기 전에 가장 아름다워요.
이름 그대로 백세교를 건너면 100세까지 산다고 합니다. 여러분이 전설을 믿든 말든, 제가 장담할 수 있는 한 가지는, 여러분이 멀리 있는 도시에서 만날 수 있는, 거의 두 개의 산 사이의 물속에서 솟아오르는 전망은 거의 다른 세계입니다.
어두워진 후 물과 여백을 밝히기 위한 조명 장치가 많이 있습니다. 어떤 것들은 하트 모양이고, 다른 것들은 백조 모양입니다. 개인적으로, 그것은 자연적인 안식처에서 제가 용인하는 종류의 인공성이 아닙니다. 만약 그것이 여러분의 배를 띄우다면 몇 개의 인스타그램 사진을 찍으세요.
그래서 만약 여러분이 대구에 살고 있거나 그 지역에 살고 있다면, 저는 여러분이 직접 가서 마술을 경험하는 것을 추천합니다. 그곳은 가장 접근하기 쉬운 지역은 아니지만 주말 오후를 맞이하기에 좋은 장소입니다. 시간이 되신다면 내려오시는 길에 용연사를 찾아 오솔길을 따라 내려가시면 연못을 볼 수 있습니다.
