A Korean Name Has 3 Syllables
The most common composition of a Korean name is:
• a syllable for the last name
• two syllables for the first name
문재인 = Moon Jae-in
박재상 = Park Jae-sang
전지현 = Jun Ji-hyun
송혜교 = Song Hye-kyo
However, a few Korean surnames are written with two syllables. In this case, parents usually give a first name of only one syllable in order to keep a full name of 3 syllables.
Also, some parents deliberately disregard Korean tradition and give a single-syllable first name associated with a single-syllable name as well. This is not common but it tends to become popular, for the sake of originality.
Though it exists, it is extremely rare to see a first name that consists of 3 syllables.

Only 286 Family Names in Korea
And yes! Korea has only 286 surnames. This is why so many Koreans have the same name!
The most common Korean names are:
김 - Kim (21.6%)
이 - Lee (14.8%)
박 - Park (8.5%)
최 - Choi (4.7%)
You can see that with these four family names, you cover half of Korean people! Indeed, nearly 50% of Koreans have the last name Kim, Lee, Park or Choi!
However, over the last 20 years in particular, there have been more and more naturalized Korean foreigners who transcribe their own names into Hangul. It is therefore now considered that there are nearly 10,000 different names in Korean territory.

How To Choose a Korean Name?
You should know that most Korean names can be written in Chinese characters (hanja). So how do Koreans choose a first name?
First, they choose a name that they like, the sound of which they like. Then, they look for Chinese characters which are pronounced the same way as each syllable independently, in order to give a nice meaning to this name.
There are thousands of Chinese characters that sound the same. In this way, identical Korean first names can correspond to first names in different Chinese characters.
Korean people, nowadays, pay little attention to the meaning of their first name in Chinese. In addition, more and more parents choose names taken from Korean words without any correspondence with Chinese characters. This is the case with names like 하늘 (Ha-Neul) which means “sky” or even 아름 (A-Reum) which is translated as “beauty” in Korean.
In addition, there are name centers to help parents find original names with nice meaning in Chinese characters.

In Korea, children take the father's surname. Note that a married woman usually keeps her maiden name to honor her family.
Besides that, I wanted to talk about first names in the same family. Indeed, it is quite common for the grandfather or the father to choose the first names of a new generation of the family. For each generation, a syllable is chosen to be included in all first names of the next generation. It is therefore very common for siblings (or even cousins) to have a common syllable in their first name.
This tradition is not always found between cousins and cousins but is quite widespread between brothers and sisters.
