Choosing an advisor is a very crucial step in higher studies.
Not only is he going to help you with your studies, guide you in your career, help you out whenever you stumble during your studies but also be your lifelong guide. Yep! I know it sounds idealistic but trust me, a good advisor can elevate your life exponentially while a bad one can easily make your life hell. Undergraduate students may not relate to this much but students in graduate schools can totally understand.

교수는 여러분의 공부를 도와줄 뿐만 아니라, 여러분의 직업을 안내할 것이고, 여러분이 공부하는 동안 비틀거릴 때마다 여러분을 도와줄 것이고, 여러분의 평생 가이드가 될 것입니다. 맞아요! 이상주의적으로 들리겠지만 저를 믿으세요. 좋은 조언자는 여러분의 삶을 기하급수적으로 끌어올릴 수 있고 나쁜 조언자는 여러분의 삶을 쉽게 지옥으로 만들 수 있어요. 학우 학생들은 이 정도까지는 공감하지 않을 수 있지만, 대학원의 학생들은 완전히 이해할 수 있습니다.
Especially for us, students who are here in a foreign country for our higher studies, we need to be even more careful when taking such a crucial decision. I have listed a few things from my experience. Hope they help.
특히 외국에 학술적인 공부를 하러 온 학생들을 위해서, 우리는 그러한 중대한 결정을 내릴 때 훨씬 더 신중할 필요가 있습니다. 저는 제 경험에서 몇 가지를 나열했습니다. 이것들이 도움이 되길 바랍니다.
1.Know about the lab you are about to join. YES. It is the most basic thing and requires maximum efforts. Try to gain as much information about the lab as you can.
1. 입사하려는 연구소에 대해 알고 있는 것이 가장 기본적이고 최대한의 노력이 필요합니다. 가능한 한 많은 정보를 얻도록 노력하세요.
Go to their web pages. Go through the research papers published by the lab. See what are the projects that are ongoing. Know and decide whether it suits you or not.

2. Contact the professor. You cannot just go up to the professor’s office and meet him or her. Mail them beforehand. Mail your resume and a project proposal: what stuff you are interested in, what project would you like to work on and what skill set you have. In short, show them why they should accept you. Increase their curiosity about you and then professors will reply in spite of their busy schedules.
2. 교수님께 연락하세요. 그냥 교수님 사무실로 올라가서 만나실 수는 없습니다. 미리 이메일을 보내는 것이 적절합니다. 이력서와 프로젝트 제안서를 우편으로 보내십시오. 관심 있는 것, 작업하고 싶은 프로젝트, 보유하고 있는 스킬이 무엇인지. 간단히 말해서, 왜 그들이 당신을 받아들여야 하는지 보여주세요. 여러분에 대한 호기심을 높이는 겁니다. 교수님들은 바쁜 일정에도 불구하고 최대하게 답장을 보내려고 노력합니다.
3. If not a professor, try contacting the lab members. Often on the website of that particular lab, the emails are listed of the current lab members or the previous lab members. Contact them and ask them about their lab environment. Usually, lab members do reply with an honest answer.
3. 교수가 아니라면 연구실 구성원들에게 연락해 보세요. 해당 연구소의 웹 사이트에는 종종 현재 연구실 구성원 또는 이전 연구실 구성원의 이메일이 나열됩니다. 그들에게 연락해서 실험실 환경에 대해 물어보세요. 보통 연구소 직원들은 솔직한 답변을 합니다.
4.In case you manage to get a reply from the professor and have been asked for an interview, prepare well. Be confident while answering questions and do not try to lie or exaggerate.
4. 교수님께 답변을 받고 면접 요청을 받은 경우에는 잘 준비하세요. 질문에 대답할 때 자신감을 갖고 거짓말을 하거나 과장하지 마세요.
Also, state your side of the facts clearly. You should know which project you will be working on, what stipend you will be receiving, the duration of the project and the type of work you will be doing. Convey to the professor why do you want to work in this field and don’t forget to be polite and precise.
또한, 사실에 대한 당신의 입장을 분명히 말하세요. 어떤 프로젝트를 진행할지, 어떤 명세를 받을지, 프로젝트 기간과 어떤 작업을 할지 알아야 합니다. 왜 당신이 이 분야에서 일하기를 원하는지 말하고 정중하고 정확하게 행동하세요.
It might be difficult but if you try hard, you can manage quite well in a lab where you are the only foreigner. Be polite and always be open to criticism and ready to learn. People will love to help you out if you have a positive attitude and an open mind.
어렵겠지만 열심히 노력하면 유일한 외국인인 연구실에서 잘 해낼 수 있습니다. 예의 바르고 항상 비판에 개방적이고 배울 준비를 하세요. 여러분이 긍정적인 태도와 열린 마음을 가지고 있다면 사람들은 여러분을 돕고 싶어할 것입니다.
