청계천: 서울의 숨겨진 보석
Today, I will tell you about a beautiful place in Seoul that I had stumbled upon and now I frequently visit the place to find some peace and calm. Seoul, as you all know, is super crowded and fast paced. The term “palli palli”, which translates to “fast fast” is literally the theme of this city. Whether you are a student or an office worker, it is easy to feel overwhelmed in this city, more so, if you happen to be a foreigner.
One day while visiting the immigration office in Jongno, I was wandering around for a place to eat when I suddenly stumbled across this place and it caught me by surprise. A beautiful stream flowing merrily right in the middle of the city. What?!
오늘은 제가 우연히 만났던 서울의 아름다운 곳이며 지금은 평화와 안전을 찾기 위해 자주 방문하는 곳에 대해 말씀을 드리고자 합니다. 아시다시피 서울은 매우 혼잡하고 빠른 속도입니다. "Palli Palli"로 번역되는 "빨리 빨리"라는 용어는 말 그대로이 도시의 주제입니다. 학생이든 직장인이든 이 도시에서는 압도 감을 느끼기 쉬운데 외국인이라면 더욱 그렇습니다.
어느날 종로에 있는 출입국 관리 사무소를 방문하다가 먹는 곳을 찾기 위해 돌아다녔는데 갑자기 이곳을 우연히 만난 것은 저를 놀라게 했습니다. 도시의 중심에서 유쾌하게 잘 흐르는 개울입니다. 이것은 뭘 입니까?
Surrounded on both sides by tall buildings, at its starting point, Cheonggyecheon Stream is a beautiful stream that is pleasing to the eyes. The beautiful sound of gushing water, the cool breeze and peace; this is how I would describe this place. The flow of the stream ebbs and rises at various places along its almost 11 km length.
I was curious about the history of this place, so I looked it up. A few decades back, the downtown area happened to be a throbbing and vibrant part of Seoul. That was the economic center and one of the most vibrant business districts in Seoul. And after the Korean war, the stream was covered with an elevated highway as a part of the country's post-war economic development. However, with time the situation deteriorated, and many safety issues appeared, and people felt the need of something that was eco-friendly yet urban to help alter the surroundings into something aesthetic and rejuvenating.
양쪽 고층 빌딩으로 둘러싸인 청계천은 시선을 사로 잡는 아름다운 개울입니다. 이 곳을 소개하자면 솟구치는 물의 아름다운 소리, 시원한 바람과 평화한 곳이라고 설명할 수 있습니다. 이 냇물의 흐름은 거의 11km 길이를 따라 여러 곳에 썰물이 되고 불어납니다.
이곳의 역사에 대해서 궁금하니 찾아보았습니다. 수십 년 전, 서울의 도심 지역은 활기 넘치고 활발한 지역이었으며 경제 중심지이자 서울에서 가장 활기찬 비즈니스 지역 중 하나였습니다. 그리고 한국 전쟁이 끝난 후에 시내는 전후 경제 개발의 일환으로 고속도로로 덮여 있었습니다.
그러나 시간의 흐름에 따라 상황이 악화되고 안전에 관련 많은 문제가 나타 났으며 사람들은 주변 환경을 미학적이고 활력이 넘치도록 바꾸는 데 도움이 되는 친환경적이자 도시적인 무언가의 필요성을 느꼈습니다.
So, the project was started, the roads were removed, and the stream was revived again with constructions in line with today’s needs. It was opened to the public in 2005. Since then, it has drawn many tourists and is a little piece of nature for everyone to enjoy. All round the year, there are many activities that take place at the plaza at the beginning of the stream. Nowadays, there is a lantern festival going on where in the entire stream is decorated with floating lanterns, some small, some huge, inside the stream, some hanging over and even the bridges are decorated. It looks majestic with all the glowing lanterns and decorations.
따라서 프로젝트가 시작되었고 도로가 제거되었으며 개울은 오늘날의 요구에 적합하는 건설로 다시 재생했습니다. 2005 년에 공개되었습니다. 그 이후로 많은 관광객을 끌어 들였고 누구나 즐길 수 있는 작은 자연의 일부입니다. 일년 내내 개울이 시작되는 광장에서는 많은 활동이 있습니다.
요즘에는 개울의 전체 공간에 따라 초롱으로 장식되는 초롱 축제가 진행되고 있으며, 작은 거도 있고 거대한 거도 있으며, 매달려 있는 것도 있고, 심지어 다리까지 장식되어 있습니다. 모든 빛나는 등불과 장식으로 장엄해 보입니다.
Since, it is quite close to the place where I live, I often come to visit here. It is a nice place to have some walk or sometimes just dip your toes there and watch the day passing by. A hidden nook right in the center of the city. Over time, it has become an integral part of Seoul’s culture.
살고 있는 곳과 아주 가까워서 이곳에 자주 방문합니다. 산책을 하거나 때로는 개울속에 발가락을 담그고 지나가는 하루를 지켜보기에 좋은 곳입니다. 도시의 중심에 숨겨진 구석, 시간의 흐름에 따라 서울 문화의 필수적인 부분이 되었습니다.
If you ever have time, visit this hidden gem of this city. This stream passes under a total of 22 bridges before flowing into the Hangang River, with many attractions along the way. I assure you; you will not be bored. Cheonggyecheon Museum also opened in September 2005 where you can see the history of this beautiful stream and how it came to be in its present state: i.e., being buried underground and being restored. It is visually interesting.
