All of us, regardless of where we were born or where we grew up, experience the same spectrum of emotions throughout our lives: Happiness, love, sadness, anger, frustration... It is believed that emotions are a universal language that helps communicate with people when words are not enough. However, in Korean culture and society, there are some original emotional concepts that are claimed to be authentically Korean. Sounds intriguing, doesn't it? Here are four commonly known Korean emotional concepts and Korean expressions in which they appear.
우리가 어디서 태어났고 어디서 자랐는지와 상관없이, 우리 모두는 살면서 같은 범위의 감정을 경험합니다: 행복, 사랑, 슬픔, 분노, 좌절... 감정은 말이 충분하지 않을 때 사람들과 의사소통하는 것을 돕는 보편적인 언어라고 여겨집니다. 하지만, 한국 문화와 사회에는 진실로 한국인이라고 주장하는 독창적인 감정적 개념이 있습니다. 흥미롭게 들리죠, 그렇죠? 여기에 일반적으로 알려진 네 가지 한국 정서 개념과 그들이 등장하는 한국어 표현이 있습니다.
Jeong (정)
Koreans themselves often say that jeong is one of the basic components of the Korean mentality, found in every interpersonal relationship. The word jeong can be very roughly translated as an emotional connection with someone or something. It can be an emotional connection with a person, with nature, or with an object that brings back precious memories. Having jeong means to be kind-hearted - not only to one's family and acquaintances, but also to unknown people. It is said that jeong is the sensitivity that deepens mutual compassion between people.
Korean expression with jeong:
정이 들다: to feel emotionally connected.
정을 주다: to show one's affection.
정이 많다: to be warm-hearted.
정이 없다: have no feeling, have no soul.
정(情)
한국인들 스스로도 “정”이 대인관계에서 찾을 수 있는 한국 정신의 기본 요소 중 하나라고 종종 말하곤 합니다. 정이라는 단어는 누군가와 감정적으로 연결되어 있는 것으로 아주 대충 해석될 수 있습니다. 그것은 사람, 자연, 또는 소중한 기억을 되살리는 물건과의 감정적인 연결일 수 있습니다. 정이 있다는 것은 가족과 지인뿐만 아니라 알려지지 않은 사람들에게도 친절하다는 것을 의미합니다. 정은 사람들 사이의 상호 연민을 깊게 하는 예민함이라고 합니다.

Han (한)
Han is a Korean concept of feeling that is very complex and encompasses various emotional states: painful powerlessness due to the inability to express anger, longing for a suppressed desire, sadness due to injustice and dependence. Many cultural scholars believe that Han emerged in Korean society as a reflection of the difficult, dark times that Korean society experienced during the period of colonial oppression (1910 - 1945), but some experts believe that Han can also be found in ancient traditional Korean literature. Han is an emotion that can only be felt during great tragedies: during war or when a beloved family member passes away.
Korean expression with han:
한탄: lamentation.
한탄할 일: regrettable affair.
원한: resentment
원한을 갚다: to take revenge.
한(恨)
“한”은 매우 복잡하고 다양한 감정 상태를 포괄하는 한국의 감정 개념으로, 분노를 표현하지 못하는 데서 오는 고통스러운 무력감, 억압된 욕망에 대한 갈망, 부정과 의존으로 인한 슬픔입니다. 많은 문화학자들은 한이 식민지 탄압기에 한국 사회가 겪고 있던 어렵고 어두운 시대의 반영으로 한국 사회에 나타났다고 생각하지만, 일부 전문가들은 한이 오래된 한국 전통 문학에서도 발견될 수 있다고 믿고 있습니다. 한 씨는 전시나 사랑하는 가족이 세상을 떠날 때라는 큰 비극이 있을 때만 느낄 수 있는 감정입니다.

Heung (흥)
Unlike Han, Heung is a very positive emotion. It is a mixture of joy, pleasure, and happiness. Heung is often described as an energy that gets you excited.
Korean expression with heung:
흥이 나다: to be excited.
흥을 내다: to cause interest.
흥이 많다: to be full of excitement
흥미롭다: to be exciting, to be interesting.
흥(興)
한과 반대로 흥은 매우 긍정적인 감정입니다. 그것은 기쁨, 즐거움, 그리고 행복의 혼합입니다. 흥은 종종 사람을 흥분시키는 에너지로 묘사됩니다.

Hyo (효)
Hyo literally means "filial duty". In other words, hyo means being a good son or daughter to one's parents, but in a broader sense, it means showing respect to any person older than oneself. This emotional concept originally comes from Confucianism.
Korean expression with hyo:
효도: filial piety.
부모에게 효를 다하다: to be devoted to one's parents.
효자: filial son
효녀: filial daughter
효(孝)
효는 말 그대로 효를 의미합니다. 다시 말해서 효는 부모에게 효나 딸이 되고 있지만, 더 넓은 의미에서 그것은 당신보다 나이가 많은 모든 사람에게 존경심을 보여주는 것을 의미합니다. 이 정서적 개념은 원래 유교에서 나온 것입니다.
