Doljanchi
Doljanchi is a Korean tradition to celebrate a child's first birthday. Dol 돌 means first birthday and janchi 잔치 means feast, so Doljanchi means first birthday party. It is an event made to wish all the best for a child, with such a blooming and bright future.
Back to the past, before Korea developed to be a prosperous nation like today, a country went through many hardships; resultantly, infants usually suffered from diseases and starvation. Therefore, being healthy after 1 year of birth is considered to be a humble milestone for a child in particular and for a family in general.

In the Doljanchi celebration, there is an activity called Doljabi, in which a child will choose some items out of 6-9 items. Korean people believe that it serves as a fortune-telling experience since the chosen items symbolize what type of person that their baby will become in the future.
돌잔치
돌잔치는 아이의 첫 번째 생일을 축하하는 한국의 전통입니다. 돌잔치는 생일를 의미하고 잔치는 연회를 의미한다. 그것은 꽃이 피고 밝은 미래를 가진 아이에게 모든 행복을 기원하는 것을 목표로 하고 있습니다.

Korean age
You may have heard before that “Korean people are always 1 year older than the rest of the world.” But have you ever found the reason why is that so?
Korea has a so-called “Korean age system” that is quite different from how we usually calculate our age. There are two main differences:

In Korea at the moment when the child is born, he/she is already considered to be one year old. It roots from the fact that the prenatal period, which takes around a year, is regarded as one first year of life.
In Korea your age changes on the New Year, not your birthday. In other words, Korean age is added for 1 year on January 1st regardless of when the birthday is. Therefore, even if a child is born on December 31st of the previous year, on the next day - the January 1st - he/she is already considered to be 2 years old.
한국 나이
