Today, I’ll be introducing you to the Jogyesa Temple. This temple is considered the most representative of Korean Buddhism, mainly because it was the first temple of the Jogye Order.

Jogyesa Temple is the perfect place to learn about Buddhism and its practices. It’s also regarded as a center for education, culture, and social services.
I visited this temple for the very first time only a couple of months ago. I wasn’t aware that it had had such an important role in the Buddhist culture of the country. The temple is located in the city of Seoul, fairly close to the touristic hub of Insadong, known for being a cultural and artistic epicenter.
조계사는 불교와 불교의 관습에 대해 배우기에 완벽한 장소입니다. 교육, 문화, 사회서비스의 중심지로도 여겨지고 있습니다.
저는 불과 두 달 전에 이 절을 처음 방문했습니다. 저는 이것이 그 나라의 불교 문화에서 그렇게 중요한 역할을 했는지 몰랐어요. 이 사찰은 문화 예술 진원지로 유명한 인사동의 관광 중심지와 상당히 가까운 서울시에 위치하고 있습니다.
Despite its centralized position and being surrounded by buildings and modernization, Jogyesa temple is able to transport you back in time as soon as you walk in.
중앙집권화된 위치와 건물과 현대화로 둘러싸여 있음에도 불구하고, 조계사는 여러분이 안으로 들어서자마자 여러분을 시간 안에 데려다 줄 수 있습니다.
Whilst researching a bit about the history of this place, I found that over the years it has three different names: Gakhawangsa Temple (when it was founded); Taegosa (from 1937 to 1054); and Jogyesa (since 1954).
이 곳의 역사에 대해 조금 연구하면서, 저는 이 곳의 이름이 세 가지라는 것을 발견했습니다. 가카왕사(창건 당시)입니다. 태고사(1937년부터 1054년까지), 그리고 조계사(1954년부터)입니다.
Once you visit the temple, you’ll find there’s plenty of things to do and see. One of which is the Daeungjeon (Main Dharma Hall): a magnificent wooden structure, which was designated ‘Tangible Cultural Heritage of the Seoul Region’ in 2000. And besides learning about its history, this location is ideal to spend an afternoon and take beautiful photos while strolling through the gardens. When I visited this past autumn, the trees were shaped like dinosaurs, funnily enough!
일단 절에 방문하면, 여러분은 할 것과 볼 것이 많다는 것을 알게 될 거예요. 그 중 하나는 대웅전(주 달마관)으로, 2000년에 '서울 지역 무형문화유산'으로 지정된 웅장한 목조건물입니다. 그리고 그곳의 역사에 대해 배우는 것 외에도, 이 장소는 정원을 거닐면서 오후를 보내고 아름다운 사진을 찍기에 이상적입니다. 제가 지난 가을에 방문했을 때, 나무는 공룡처럼 생겨서 재미있었어요!
I should also let you know that the ideal time to visit the Jogyesa Temple is in May. This is when the temple celebrates Buddha's birthday and holds the ‘Lotus Lantern Festival’, for which the entire grounds are decorated with colored lanterns.
Another curious fact about the Jogyesa Temple is that the trees in its garden have been there for approximately 500 years! And there is also a 15-meter-high pagoda, built for the temple’s 100th anniversary in 2010.
조계사를 방문하기 가장 좋은 시기는 5월이라는 것도 알려드려야 할 것 같습니다. 이것은 사찰이 부처님 오신 날을 기념하고 '연등축제'를 여는 날인데, 이 축제를 위해 온 땅을 채색등으로 장식합니다.
조계사에 대한 또 다른 흥미로운 사실은 조계사의 정원에 있는 나무들이 약 500년 동안 그곳에 있었다는 것입니다! 그리고 15미터 높이의 탑도 있는데, 2010년에 이 사찰의 100주년을 위해 지어졌습니다.
Jogyesa is a colorful setting all-year-round – even without the extra decoration. It’s well worth a visit, especially since it’s close to most historical landmarks in the Korean capital.
조계사는 별도의 장식 없이도 일년 내내 다채로운 무대입니다. 특히 한국의 수도에 있는 대부분의 역사적 명소들과 가깝기 때문에, 그것은 방문할 만한 가치가 충분히 있습니다.
If you want to learn more about Buddhism in Korea, you can also visit the Central Buddhist Museum, where you may find even more depictions and artifacts. You can also experience how life in the temple used to be, indulging in traditional tea ceremonies, guided meditation, crafting lotus flowers, and many other activities.
